Spirit Airlines temporarily reduces direct flights to Orlando, Florida, at Arnold Palmer Regional Airport

LATROBE, Pa. (KDKA) – Spirit Airlines is making some changes to flights to and from Arnold Palmer Regional Airport in Westmoreland County that may impact your summer travel plans.

If you're flying from Arnold Palmer Regional Airport to Orlando, Florida in August, Spirit Airlines is reducing service from one daily direct flight to four flights per week.

Gabe Monzo, executive director of the Westmoreland County Airport Authority, says Spirit Airlines is reducing its flights to allow for maintenance on its fleet's aircraft engines.

“It's a recall, and some of the planes will be taken out of service for a period of time,” Monzo said. “It's not a safety issue. It's just a standard recall, and they have to put all the planes through the process.”

Although service to Orlando will be limited in late summer, Monzo says daily direct flights will be available again in the fall for anyone heading south.

The number of passengers at the airport has increased and flights to Orlando and Myrtle Beach generate an annual economic impact of $226 million for the region.

That number is likely to increase in September as Spirit Airlines plans to increase its flights to Myrtle Beach from once daily to twice daily.

“Everyone hears about reductions and thinks, 'Oh my God, they're packing up and moving out,'” Monzo said. “Well, that's not the case. With the increase in flights in September, we feel like they're committed to that and are putting a lot of effort into getting the service to the level it should be and hopefully doing even better things in the future.”
