Idaho State Police promotes sober driving on Independence Day

MERIDIAN, Idaho – With Independence Day approaching, the Idaho State Police (ISP) is partnering with the Idaho Transportation Department’s Office of Highway Safety (OHS) to combat driving under the influence.

From July 3-10, law enforcement will increase efforts to prevent and arrest drivers under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

“Driving under the influence of alcohol not only puts the life of the driver at risk, but also everyone in our community – our children, neighbors and friends,” Colonel Kedrick Wills said in a statement. “This Fourth of July, safety and responsibility should be everyone's first priority. By planning a sober drive, we can protect our loved ones and ensure everyone can enjoy the holidays safely.”

According to ISP, the Independence Day celebration coincides with the 100 deadliest days on Idaho's roadways – between Memorial Day and Labor Day – when fatal crashes occurred. Preliminary data from the OHS shows that 31 people have died in crashes in Idaho since Memorial Day weekend this year.

Tips for safe travel this Independence Day:

  • Schedule a sober driver: Before you go to a social event or a night out, arrange a sober ride. This could be a friend, family member, or a local taxi service.
• Consider ride-sharing services: While there may be limited ride-sharing options in rural areas, look for services in nearby cities. Consider areas with poor phone service and plan accordingly.
  • Host safe gatherings: If you host a party that involves alcohol consumption, offer non-alcoholic beverages and arrange transportation for guests who need to be brought home sober.
