Woman charged with alleged drug smuggling through Utah

A foreign national has been charged with allegedly smuggling methamphetamine, heroin, cocaine and fentanyl through Utah.

Leonilde Andrea Lopez Vargas, 35, of Midvale was charged Wednesday with possession of methamphetamine with intent to resell, possession of fentanyl with intent to resell, possession of heroin with intent to resell and possession of cocaine with intent to resell, the Utah Attorney General's Office said.

According to court documents, Vargas was arrested in June following a criminal investigation initiated in November 2023 by the FBI's Wasatch Metro Drug Task Force.

Agents reportedly seized approximately 2,813 grams of fentanyl that tested positive, which is estimated to be equivalent to approximately 28,000 pills. Agents also seized approximately 1,648 grams of heroin that tested positive and approximately 1,182.5 grams of cocaine that tested positive at Vargas' Midvale residence.

Agents seized about 478 grams of methamphetamine from Vargas' vehicle, which tested positive, the Utah Attorney General's Office said.

Prior to the June seizure, agents also seized approximately 502.88 grams of heroin that tested positive, 1,892.11 grams of methamphetamine that tested positive, approximately 670.62 grams of fentanyl that tested positive, and a digital scale from a storage unit suspected of being associated with Vargas in West Valley City.

Her first arraignment appearance is scheduled for July 8 at 11:30 a.m.
