7-year-old boy in Pennsylvania dies in agricultural accident

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — A 7-year-old boy died in a farming accident in Montgomery Township, Franklin County.

The boy died Tuesday when he was struck by a piece of farm equipment around 10 a.m. in the area of ​​Young and Mercersburg roads in Montgomery Township, CBS affiliate WHP-TV reported. Officials said the boy was helping in the field at the time of the accident.

There is no evidence of a crime, the television station reported. Officials did not release any further details, including the boy's name.

Franklin County is located in south-central Pennsylvania, with the southern part of the county bordering Pennsylvania and Maryland.

Agricultural accidents in Pennsylvania

Last year, 33 people died from injuries sustained in agricultural accidents, according to a study by Pennsylvania State University's College of Agricultural Sciences. The university said 37 people died in 2022.

According to Penn State, research shows that fatal accidents on farms “disproportionately affect young children and older adults.”
