Hartford man sentenced to 33 months in prison for fentanyl trafficking

BRIDGEPORT – A Hartford man has been sentenced to more than two years in prison for trafficking cocaine and fentanyl, officials said.

In a press release Wednesday, the Office of the U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut said Luis Ivan Diaz was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Stefan R. Underhill in Bridgeport to 33 months in prison, followed by four years of probation, for trafficking fentanyl and cocaine.

The U.S. Attorney's Office said Connecticut State Police obtained an arrest warrant for Diaz after his DNA was found on a gun thrown from a vehicle during a chase on March 8, 2022. The DEA's Hartford Task Force also identified Diaz as a fentanyl dealer.

Diaz was located and arrested on state charges on November 3, 2022, the U.S. Attorney's Office said, adding that he had approximately 35 grams of fentanyl, 23 grams of cocaine and five grams of crack cocaine on him at the time of his arrest.

The U.S. Attorney's Office said Diaz was indicted on April 26, 2023, and arrested on June 6, 2023, in Superior Court in Hartford, where a case against him was pending. During his arrest, a search of a fanny pack he was in possession of revealed approximately 40 grams of fentanyl and 18 grams of crack cocaine.

Diaz has been in custody since his federal arrest, the U.S. Attorney's Office said. He also pleaded guilty on Jan. 2 to possession of fentanyl and cocaine with intent to resell.
