Heat warning for most of Georgia for Independence Day

A hot Independence Day is expected and a heat advisory has been issued for most of the state for the holiday.

A heat warning is in effect for all of north and central Georgia, except for the South Carolina border counties and the mountains. High temperatures and high humidity will combine in the warning area, resulting in heat index values of up to 109º. The further south you go, the higher index values will occur. Locally, Banks, Jackson and Madison counties are affected.

With all the outdoor activities that take place during the holidays, it is extremely important to protect yourself from the heat. Stay hydrated, avoid being outside during the hottest part of the day between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., and know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Drinking plenty of fluids with electrolytes is the best way to avoid dehydration. Also remember to apply sunscreen to avoid sunburn as extremely high UV index values of 9-10 are expected. Even in the mountains, high temperatures of 35 to 39 degrees are expected, with heat index values of around 38 degrees expected during the hottest part of the day.

The only relief could be scattered to isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon. These storms will not be widespread, but could affect some evening fireworks displays. Morning parades should go ahead without a problem, but be on the lookout for possible storms afterward.

As the hot weather continues over the weekend, more heat warnings are expected to be issued. Fortunately, the chance of rain will increase on Friday, which should help.
