Pilot Noel Wien's historic Fairbanks flight honored with statue unveiling and public ceremony | Local news

A century ago, a timid but determined pilot made the first flight from Anchorage to Fairbanks, navigating the route in an open-top plane that took just under four hours before landing at Weeks Field.

On Tuesday, hundreds gathered at the Pikes Waterfront Lodge to celebrate Noel Wien's achievement and unveil a white spruce statue carved by local woodsmith Amanda O'Neil. Five generations of the extended Wien clan were among those in attendance as dignitaries paid their respects to the pilot who pioneered Alaska's aviation history.
