Governor Mills supports Biden for the 2024 election

Gov. Janet Mills says she had a “candid and constructive conversation” with President Joe Biden and other Democratic governors on Wednesday. In a statement to Maine's Total Coverage late Wednesday night, Mills said she supports the president as “an outstanding leader of our country.” “I also conveyed to the president that last week's debate was difficult to watch, that some Maine folks have raised concerns with me since then about his campaign, including concerns about whether he could win, and that it would be good for him to reassure Maine voters as he has reassured us,” Mills wrote. “The president has made it clear to me and the other governors that he is in it to win and that he will make his case to the American people — and I believe him. Over the next few months, and especially in the days ahead, I look forward to the president showing the American people the same heart, determination and drive that he brought to our conversation tonight — qualities I have come to know well in my time with him over the years. I stand behind President Biden and his accomplishments for the people of Maine over the chaos and ineptitude that Donald Trump would bring upon the American people.” Governors Gavin Newsom of California and Kathy Hochul of New York attended the White House meeting virtually, while others, like Mills, joined the president virtually. The meeting also comes as a second Democratic congressman has called on Biden to step down as the Democratic nominee for the 2024 election. After Texas Rep. Lloyd Doggett said earlier this week that Biden should step down, Rep. Raúl Grijalva of Arizona told the New York Times he would support the party's nominee no matter who it was, but now was the opportunity to “look elsewhere.”
