NH delegation responds to calls for Biden's exit

New Hampshire's Democratic congressional delegation is not united behind President Joe Biden, but it is not abandoning him either. There have been calls for Biden to drop out of the presidential race after his poor showing in a recent debate. “From my conversations with voters over the last few days, the debate has been a major concern for most Granite Staters,” U.S. Rep. Chris Pappas told News 9. “President Biden was unable to make an effective argument or hold Donald Trump accountable for his lies and extreme agenda. The president must decide if he is able to restore trust and move on in this race.” U.S. Sen. Maggie Hassan is the only member of the delegation to voice her support for the president, saying she continues to support his re-election. “Donald Trump poses a serious threat to our democracy and freedoms, and he only thinks about himself,” Hassan said. “President Biden debated poorly, but he clearly stood up for the American people, which is why I continue to support his re-election.” U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen took no position on Biden's status.>>Download the free WMUR app for updates on the go: Apple | Google Play<<"There are two very different visions for the country, and Donald Trump wants to further restrict our rights and freedoms," Shaheen said. "Americans have to choose, and I will remain focused on what is at stake in this election." Outgoing U.S. Rep. Annie Kuster told CNN she has communicated her concerns about the president's well-being to the White House and the Biden campaign. In a statement to News 9, she took no direct position on Biden's status. "President Biden is one of the most productive and effective leaders in our country's history and has delivered historic victories for American families," Kuster said. "Donald Trump poses a serious threat to our democracy and our personal freedoms. I am committed to helping Democrats win the White House, hold the Senate and take back the House so we can continue to make progress for the American people and defeat MAGA extremism." In an interview for CloseUP, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jon Kiper was blunt about Biden's difficulties in the debate. "It was very disturbing to see him not being able to properly express himself and finish his sentences, and I think we as Democrats need to stop manipulating people and making them believe that's OK," Kiper said. "I would certainly like to see someone else there. But again, if he's the nominee, I will support him because I'm a Democrat, but I don't think that's going to end well." Even as public pressure mounts, analysts say this is not a situation that will be easily resolved in the White House. Neil Levesque of the New Hampshire Institute of Politics said anyone who is driven to run for president from the start might have a hard time giving up the race. "At this level, people are extremely competitive," Levesque said. "They fight very hard to even get where they are. And for someone to come along and say, 'You have to resign,' just doesn't happen."

In an interview for CloseUP, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jon Kiper spoke bluntly about Biden’s difficulties in the debate.

“It was very disturbing to see him not being able to properly express himself and finish his sentences, and I think we as Democrats need to stop manipulating people and making them think that's OK,” Kiper said. “I would definitely like to see someone else up there. Even as public pressure mounts, this situation is not an easy one to resolve, according to White House analysts. Neil Levesque of the New Hampshire Institute of Politics believes that anyone who is already running for president will find it difficult to give up the race.

“At this level, people are extremely competitive,” Levesque said. “They fight very hard to even get where they are. And for someone to come and say, 'You need to step aside,' just doesn't happen.”
