Cincinnati Reds vs New York Yankees – July 3, 2024

Cincinnati jumped out to a 5-0 lead last night before hanging on for a 5-4 win last night. Tonight the Reds will look to pick up a series win in New York over the Yankees. First pitch is set for 7:05pm ET. Tonight’s game is the Free Game of the Day on MLB.tv (out of market only).

Starting Lineup

Starting Pitchers

Andrew Abbott

After giving up six runs in his final start of May, Andrew Abbott pitched well in June, making five starts with a 3.71 ERA. The last time out, though, he walked a fine line as he gave up two runs despite walking six batters and giving up a home run in 5.0 innings against St. Louis.

As you likely expected, left-handed batters have performed worse against Abbott than righties have. They do have a higher average, but the difference is minimal, and they walk less and hit for far less power. Right-handed hitters don’t hit for average or get on base much, but when they do get hits, they hit for a lot of power. Abbott’s given up 14 of his league leading 16 home runs to righties this season.

Carlos Rodon

The last three starts for Carlos Rodon couldn’t have gone much worse. He’s allowed 21 runs in 13.2 innings and given up five home runs among the 28 hits he’s allowed during that span.

The splits for Rodon exist. Teams aren’t sending too many lefties out there against him, but when they get the chance they aren’t doing as well as righties. They aren’t hitting for average and aren’t drawing walks – but they are hitting for solid power when they do get hits. Right-handed hitters are hitting for a solid average, but they don’t walk much. They are hitting for plenty of power against him, though.

News and Notes

Blake Dunn up, Levi Jordan down

If you looked at the lineup you already noticed that Blake Dunn is in New York and in the outfield. He was called up earlier today and is taking the place on the roster of Levi Jordan, who is heading back to Triple-A. We wrote about that earlier today when the moves were announced if you wanted to dive a little bit deeper.

Reds uncommitted to being buyers or sellers

Cincinnati is in 4th place in the division and 10.5 games back. They are owners of the 11th worst record in the National League, too, but are *only* four games out of a playoff spot with the new rules were everyone and your mother makes the playoffs. General Manager Brad Meador told Gordon Wittenmyer of the Cincinnati Enquirer that the club is going to have to wait and see how things play out (over the next few weeks) before deciding their plan of action with regards to the trade deadline.
