Staying cool in triple-digit temperatures in Central California

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) – The Fourth of July is just around the corner and families are looking for ways to enjoy the holiday week while staying cool in triple-digit heat.

“The Fourth of July is a very joyous occasion, a very celebratory one, so we need to make it celebratory for everyone,” said Dr. AM Aminian of the Allergy Institute.

Dr. Aminian says it's important for people to stay hydrated, use sunscreen, limit outdoor activities, watch what they eat and drink, and – most importantly – listen to their bodies and take precautions.

“If you're outside and you feel a little dizzy, your mouth is dry, you have a tightness in your chest and you're not feeling yourself, be aware that the heat could be making your symptoms worse,” explains Dr. Aminian.

When this point is reached, Dr. Aminin says you need to drink water immediately.

Fresno Ag noticed an influx of customers coming in to prepare for the heat wave.

The most popular items purchased off the shelf are atomizers.

“People understandably come to us for the misting fans. We have misting fans for pets, outdoor misting fans, kits for the house and pedestal fans that are great for kids,” says Reyes Soria, a sales representative for Fresno Ag.

Authorities recommend avoiding lakes and using local swimming pools, paddling pools and cooling centers instead.

On Wednesday afternoon, Mayor Jerry Dyer and Council Member Miguel Arias announced the opening of the community's 9th splash pad at Fink-White Park, saying it is a significant addition to West Fresno.

“It’s a place where kids can come with their families to make memories, make new friends and have a safe place for our kids during the summer months,” Dyer said.
