Christian Walker hits Dodger Stadium

LOS ANGELES – Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Christian Walker couldn't say exactly why he smashes baseballs at an unearthly speed at Dodger Stadium.

The Diamondbacks pulled off a great team win at Chavez Ravine on Wednesday, overcoming an early 4-1 deficit with 11 unanswered runs to even their series against the Dodgers.

Walker scored four runs in a 4-for-5 performance, including two home runs. He missed three home runs by inches when he hit a double off the wall in left.

Walker has already hit seven home runs in games against the Dodgers this season, including two multi-home run games. He has hit five home runs in as many games at Dodger Stadium, but his dominance at this park extends well beyond 2024.

“It's just the way it is,” Walker said. “There's no rhyme or reason for it… I think if you play well in a park, there are a few parks in the league where the batter's box and maybe the lighting, maybe just the visuals, feel kind of different, but that's just the way it is, not really a specific thing.”

“It's almost a running joke in the dugout that he's going to get a hit or two every series when he comes in here, and he's done that,” added manager Torey Lovullo. “He's in such a good position.”

In numbers: Christian Walker's dominance at Dodger Stadium

17 home runs

Walker has hit 17 career home runs at Chavez Ravine since 2018. According to MLB researcher Sarah Langs, that's six runs, the most by an opposing player during that time period.

He also ties Luis Gonzalez and Paul Goldschmidt for the most home runs hit at Dodger Stadium by a Diamondbacks player in franchise history. Gonzalez did it in 282 at-bats and Goldschmidt in 270.

Walker has only 147 batting appearances in the ballpark throughout his career.

“Honestly, it's just a fun baseball thing,” Walker said. “I wish I had something for you, but it's just one of those things.”

5

Walker has hit five home runs in his last four games at what Wikipedia briefly referred to as “Christian Walker Stadium.”

The list of players who have accomplished this feat, according to Langs, is: 2024 Walker, 2021 Fernando Tatis Jr., 2013 Hunter Pence, 2001 Gonzalez and 1979 Mike Schmidt. That's it. The Dodgers entered for the 1962 season.

41 games

Walker has played 41 games at Dodger Stadium and is hitting .415 home runs per game. Over a 162-game season, Walker would be on pace to hit more than 67 home runs.

To put that in context, Barry Bonds holds the single-season record with 73. Mark McGwire reached 70. Sammy Sosa is next on the list with 66.

“I wish I could put my finger on it,” Lovullo said. “Walk must have really good sight lines here. He must love the scenery. He shrinks this stadium as well as anyone I've ever seen.”

No one has ever done this in the history of the Dodgers:

3 rackets

Walker is one of three players with at least 17 home runs in an opposing park since 2018. The other two are Aaron Judge (19) at Camden Yards in Baltimore and Mike Trout (18) at T-Mobile Park in Seattle.

1 game

Unfortunately for Walker, the D-backs have just one game left at Dodger Stadium this season, which is Thursday's final game. The two teams are 4-4 this year and will play a four-game series at Chase Field beginning August 30.

20 home runs

Regardless of his dominance at Dodger Stadium, Walker surpassed the 20-home run mark for the third consecutive year and fourth time with the D-backs.

He is tied with Bryce Harper for most home runs by a first baseman in the National League and leads the position group with 59 RBIs. He is third behind Harper and Los Angeles' Freddie Freeman in OPS (.845) and slugging (.506).

The All-Star Game is less than two weeks away. Harper was named the NL first baseman but is on the injured list with a mild hamstring strain. He could return before the All-Star break.

The reserve players are selected by player voting and the Commissioner’s Office.

“I hope he gets serious consideration,” Lovullo – who will manage the NL – said of Walker's case. “I would love to take him to Texas.”
