Haitian Flag Day celebration at the Pennsylvania State Capitol in May

by Bring The Change

As Caribbean Heritage Month drew to a close, Bring The Change proudly honored the historic celebration of Haitian Flag Day on Monday, May 20, at the Pennsylvania State Capitol. For the first time in Commonwealth history, we honored Haitian culture in the Rotunda.

This special event, organized in partnership with Bring The Change, the PA Legislative Latino Caucus, and the PA Legislative Black Caucus, was a remarkable success. We would like to sincerely thank Representatives Johanny Cepeda-Freytiz, Napoleon Nelson, Danilo Burgos, Lindsay Powell, Carol Kazeem, Iber Guerrero Lopez, April Ashe, and Harrisburg NAACP President Frank Allen for their attendance and support.

Attendees were treated to an insightful presentation on the history of the Haitian flag and had the opportunity to explore a cultural exhibit curated by Camille Felix featuring various artifacts. Alex Civil, founder and executive director of Bring The Change, highlighted Haiti's significant contribution to U.S. culture and its pivotal role in freeing many Latin American countries from slavery.

The event also featured a delicious sampling of Haitian cuisine prepared by Chef Enock Alcindor, allowing guests to experience the rich flavors of Haiti. This celebration was a proud moment for Haitians across the state of Pennsylvania, and we look forward to celebrating Haitian Flag Day again in 2025.
