6 Fireworks That Are Actually Legal in New Jersey

Are you ready for your epic garden light show to celebrate the holidays?

If you're scratching your head, you might be one of those people who don't know that backyard fireworks have been legalized in New Jersey! Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie legalized certain fireworks in the Garden State back in 2018, and retailers are more prepared than ever this year.

But don't get too excited. The law has only legalized sparklers on the ground in the garden. Don't expect to get your hands on fireworks that light up the night like the fireworks over Cinderella's castle at Walt Disney World. Those bad boys are still banned. Basically anything that even gets airborne is still banned, so if you're planning on lighting up contraband, don't be surprised if the police come to your house and give you a fine.

The New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs explains in detail the different types of trouble that can arise if you fail to comply with the laws.

1.) Party Poppers and Snappers

You know those little contraptions where you pull the cord and confetti and a little popping spark fly out? Those are legal. The same goes for the little firecrackers you throw on the ground. You know, the ones your parents probably got illegally back in the day and you threw at your cousin's feet at the family barbecue?

Now you can legally keep the tradition alive for the next generation.

2.) Smoke bombs

Pretty simple but not entirely disappointing, smoke bombs are easy to light in the garden and give off different colored smoke that looks really cool when combined with other sparklers and different colors.

3.) Jumping Jacks

Jumping Jack fireworks are set off on the ground and then quickly (and quite literally) start bouncing in all sorts of directions. If you're standing relatively close, you might get caught up in a game of catch with some of them as they hop in your direction, so as always, be careful.

4.) Cone fountain

This bad boy sits on the ground and shoots a fountain of sparkler-like sparks into the air. Sparks are allowed to leave the ground, but not the base or the “device” itself.

5.) Flying saucers

These things are cool. You put them on the ground, light them, and then the thing spins and spins while it shoots out sparks from the top and all sides. Don't do this on the lawn, folks. This should go without saying, but you know… just in case anyone thinks these things plus flammable leaves are a good idea… it's not. Don't do it.

6.) Drum fountain

Save this for your grand finale because it's definitely one of the best. Sparks, smoke, all kinds of colors – it's worth waiting for.

If you plan on lighting some of these up, make sure you follow ALL recommended safety precautions! No one needs to go to the emergency room this summer.

My two big German Shepherds just hated the 4th of July. My dog Bella would always run into the bathroom, push aside the shower curtain and lay in the tub.
