Fireworks in Watertown postponed to Friday, July 5 due to threatening weather | Local news

{KXLG – Watertown, SD} South Dakota's largest fireworks display has officially been postponed until Friday, July 5, due to inclement weather forecast for the evening of July 4th, Independence Day. But the fun isn't over yet! Here's everything you need to know for a safe and memorable 4th of July weekend:

Experience the largest fireworks display in South Dakota brighten up the night sky Friday, July 5 at the Anza Soccer Field. Festivities begin at 5 p.m. with bouncy houses to entertain the little ones, followed by lively music from a DJ until 10 p.m. Don't forget to bring chairs, blankets and an appetite – concessions are available for your convenience. The Watertown fireworks show is organized and operated by Lew's Fireworks, a local family business that has been in business for several generations.

Safety with fireworks comes first:

As the community awaits the grand finale, it is important to remember that the discharging of fireworks is prohibited within city limits, except on private property on Lake Kampeska. Watertown Police urge everyone to celebrate responsibly. If you plan to drink alcohol, designate a sober driver and prioritize safety over convenience. The Watertown Fire Department reminds residents to be cautious around fireworks, especially firecrackers and sparklers, which account for a significant portion (42%) of fireworks-related injuries.

Start your day in Kranzburg, SD where one of the most famous parades in Eastern South Dakota begins at 10:30 a.m. Experience the traditional parade and don't miss the Watertown 4th of July Parade on Thursday, July 4th! It begins at 1:45 p.m. with a candy toss and the parade begins at 2 p.m. at the intersection of Fourth Street and East Kemp Avenue and heads west to Watertown Stadium.

Don't have room to shoot off your own fireworks? No problem! Head to the Premier Softball Complex parking lot on Wednesday, July 3 from 6-11 p.m. to participate in a free fireworks display for the community. Several stations will be set up so families can shoot off fireworks safely.

City closures and garbage collection:

  • City Hall and some offices will be closed on Thursday, July 4th.
  • If your regular garbage collection falls on a Thursday, it will be picked up on Friday instead.

Parking and safety information:

Please park in the designated Anza parking lot. Remember, this is an alcohol-free event. No parking is permitted along 17th Street and 20th Avenue. After the fireworks, 17th Street will be closed for cleanup until 20 minutes after the show ends.
