South Florida steps up relief efforts after Hurricane Beryl devastates Caribbean

FL. – The Global Empowerment Mission in Doral continued its mission on Thursday and led a relief effort in response to The devastating impact of Hurricane Beryl on parts of the Caribbean.

Devastating images and videos Heavy rains occurred in several Caribbean countries as Hurricane Beryl, now a Category 3 storm, left a trail of devastation.

“Beryl is from Union Island, the Grenadines, Granada and hopefully not, but possibly, the Yucatan Peninsula,” said Michael Capponi, president and CEO of Global Empowerment Mission.

“Thousands and thousands of households will have to buy plywood, roofing felt, shingles and the like, otherwise they will never be able to go home again,” he added.

In response, the GEM in Doral is packing emergency aid packages to send to the affected countries.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava presented the collected items during a press conference on Thursday.

“Exactly what is needed – sheets and blankets, cots, sleeping bags, garbage bags, tarps and tents,” Levine Cava said. “The generators should come to this place.”

The aid packages also contain canned goods, first aid kits, hygiene items and generators.

Donations can be dropped off at the GEM warehouse in Doral and at the county libraries in South Dade, North Dade and Aventura.

The aim of these efforts is to help Caribbean communities severely affected by the hurricane.

Miami-Dade County Commissioner Oliver Gilbert emphasized the close ties between South Florida and the Caribbean.

“We're not neighbors, we're family, and we act like family,” Gilbert said. “They don't have the security of air conditioning or Wi-Fi, and they're not lounging by the pool. They're thinking about what to eat next, how to cover their heads, where to sleep, where their kids sleep.”

In Doral, workers are asking the public not to donate clothing or used items.

GEM has a section on its website with detailed information on how the public can contribute to the relief efforts supporting relief and reconstruction efforts in the Caribbean.
