Heat warnings expected in Utah after cool weather on July 4

SALT LAKE CITY — The Fourth of July in Utah is expected to be one of the coldest in about five years. However, some parts of the state will experience intense heat between July 7 and 11.

“This will be a record high,” said KSL meteorologist Kevin Eubank. “St. George will rise to 114 [degrees Fahrenheit]their all-time record is 117. So it's going to be really hot next week.”

On July 4, the National Weather Service issued a wildfire warning for 482 Western Uintah Basin. The NWS says the warning means “critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or are imminent.” The warning is in effect until 9 p.m. Thursday evening.

The NWS says an extreme heat warning is in effect for Glen Canyon Recreation Area/Lake Powell, Lower Washington County and Zion National Park from 9 a.m. Sunday morning through 9 p.m. Monday evening.

Heat safety

According to the NWS, the risk of heat illness increases as temperatures rise in the areas listed above. To stay safe, the NWS offers the following tips:

  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Stay in an air-conditioned room
  • Stay out of the sun
  • Do not leave children and pets unattended in vehicles

If you plan to go outside, the NWS recommends wearing clothing appropriate for the type of outdoor activity you will be doing. This type of clothing should be loose and lightweight.

The NWS also advises people to look out for others and watch for signs of heat stroke.
