3 sodas are now banned forever in Illinois

There were rumors this was going to happen, and now it's official. So far, there have been at least three sodas widely available in Illinois that have been banned forever, thanks to the Food and Drug Administration.

I saw Ars Technica breaking the news that the FDA has now issued a long-awaited ban on a soda additive that, according to their report, is “no longer considered safe.” The ingredient in question is brominated vegetable oil (BVO). What the FDA is saying is their “last rule” was issued just yesterday, July 3, 2024. It states: “The Food and Drug Administration (FDA or we) is amending our regulations to revoke the approval for the use of brominated vegetable oil (BVO) in food.”

According to the Today Show, there are three brands of soda in Illinois that use BVO to date, and they are the following:

Sundrops

Orangette from Walmart

Orange Lemonade from Giant Foods

You can expect these 3 sodas (my wife still calls them “pop”) to soon disappear from the shelves once the Food and Drug Administration’s decision officially takes effect. The FDA’s statement states that this 2 August 2024After that date, stores in Illinois will no longer be allowed to sell these products.
