Connecticut man says he can't “remember” I-91 crash

A Connecticut man is charged with drunken driving and other offenses after allegedly fleeing a multi-vehicle crash in Cromwell on Wednesday, Connecticut State Police said Thursday.

State police said Cesar Estrada, 36, of Plainville, told officers “he did not remember being involved in an accident” after he allegedly struck two vehicles on I-91 North and ran away.

When officers found Estrada after the crash, he had “visible signs of impairment,” according to state police. Officers administered a standardized sobriety test, and Estrada did not meet the requirements, state police said.

According to state police, the incident occurred at approximately 10:45 a.m. Estrada was driving a Nissan Maxima and collided with a Freightliner while attempting to merge from the Exit 21 ramp into the right lane of I-91 north.

According to state police, Estrada then lost control of his Nissan and collided with a Toyota Tundra traveling in the middle lane.

According to state police, Estrada allegedly fled the scene of the accident and continued north on I-91.

Shortly after arriving at the scene, troopers found the unoccupied Nissan on the right shoulder of I-91 near Exit 23, state police said.

According to state police, officers were able to trace the vehicle back to its registered owner, who said the Nissan was last driven by Estrada.

State police said the owner told troopers she was with Estrada at a clinic in Middletown.

After state police found Estrada at the hospital, police said he “confirmed he was the only occupant of the Nissan that morning.” However, Estrada said he did not remember being involved in an accident, state police said.

During questioning, state police said Estrada appeared “impaired.” After failing to properly pass the standardized sobriety test, Estrada was arrested, state police said.

Estrada was summoned to CSP Troop H in Hartford, state police said. His appearance is scheduled for 9 a.m. July 22 in Middletown Superior Court.

Estrada is charged with illegal operation of a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol/drugs (second offense), failure to maintain proper lane on a highway, and two counts of evading responsibility.
