Top NHL players to watch against Utah Hockey Club – Deseret News

With Utah hosting NHL action this fall, a whole host of new characters are coming to town.

Just as NBA legends and superstars have visited the Delta Center over the years, the NHL's elite will now be there to compete against the Utah Hockey Club, which begins its inaugural season on October 8 against the Chicago Blackhawks.

There is currently no shortage of stars in the ice hockey world.

Here are five players you want to see in action when they come to Salt Lake City this season.

Utah's NHL debut on October 8 will feature rising phenom Connor Bedard, widely considered the brightest young talent of his generation.

Bedard, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft, burst onto the scene as a rookie last year, scoring 22 goals and 61 points.

Thanks to this performance, he was awarded the Calder Memorial Trophy as the league's most outstanding player in his first year. The 18-year-old is one of the youngest players to ever win this award.

With the Blackhawks playing in Utah's division, fans of the hockey club will be able to witness Bedard's rise to become the next NHL superstar up close. Perhaps the famous rivalry between the Jazz and the Bulls from the 1990s will soon return in the form of a hockey game.

When Bedard plays in Utah: October 8 and February 25.

Auston Matthews, centre of the Toronto Maple Leafs

Auston Matthews is coming off one of the most prolific seasons of all time, scoring 69 goals, the most of any player since 1996.

The American star has averaged an incredible 46 goals per season since joining the NHL in 2016. He won the 2022 Hart Memorial Trophy as the league's most valuable player.

When Matthews plays in Utah: March 10.

Nathan MacKinnon, Colorado Avalanche Center

Reigning Hart Memorial Trophy winner Nathan MacKinnon possesses a unique combination of skill and power that has made him a fierce point-scoring force for Colorado, where he scored 140 points last season and 111 in the 2022-23 season.

With the Avalanche playing in Utah's division and just one state away, the emergence of a regional rivalry between the two clubs is almost guaranteed, with MacKinnon clearly representing the face of the rival.

When MacKinnon plays in Utah: October 24 and December 27.

Connor McDavid, centre of the Edmonton Oilers

Many consider Connor McDavid to be the best player in all of hockey right now. After all, he was named MVP of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, even though his team lose in the final.

McDavid, who has already won the Hart Trophy three times at age 27, led the league in points five times and assists four times. No Oilers player has dominated at such a high level as McDavid since the great Wayne Gretzky himself.

When McDavid plays in Utah: November 29th.

Even though he is no longer the formidable force he once was on the ice, living legend Alex Ovechkin is still a dangerous goal scorer and still has plenty of potential to achieve one of the greatest successes in hockey.

In 19 seasons, Ovechkin has scored 853 goals, just 41 behind Gretzky for the NHL's all-time scoring lead. He probably won't score his 895th goal this season, but Ovechkin's pursuit of the record in Utah will be must-see television.

When Ovechkin plays in Utah: November 18.
