Young swimmer has to be rescued at Limington Rapids on the Saco River

Fire officials said the young man was semi-conscious when the ambulance left the scene and CPR was performed after he was pulled from the water.

LIMINGTON, Maine – A young swimmer was hospitalized Thursday afternoon after requiring rescue following an accident while swimming in the Limington Rapids of the Saco River.

The Limington Fire Chief told NEWS CENTER Maine that swimmers in the area saw a young man go underwater but did not resurface on his own. The man's age was not immediately known, the fire chief said.

When the young swimmer was pulled from the water, he was reportedly unresponsive. Other swimmers in the area performed CPR while waiting for emergency responders to arrive.

“When we arrived, the person had a pulse and was semi-conscious,” the fire chief said.

Authorities said he was taken by ambulance to Maine Medical Center in Portland.

The Limington Fire Department was assisted on scene by Standish Fire/EMS.
