Police shoot suspect who allegedly held hostages at South Dakota gas station | The Mighty 790 KFGO

SIOUX FALLS, SD (AP) — South Dakota police say a deputy shot and killed an armed suspect Wednesday who allegedly held several employees at a Sioux Falls gas station hostage.

A Sioux Falls police officer was at the gas station early Wednesday morning when someone began shooting at the officer, who returned fire, Sioux Falls Police Chief Jon Thum told the Argus Leader. Police received a 911 call about the shooting around the same time.

Reinforcements arrived, Thum said, and a Minnehaha County sheriff's deputy and a SWAT officer shot the suspect with a sniper rifle.

Police found one hostage hiding in a bathroom and another who had been near the suspect, Thum said. Another hostage had already escaped.

According to Thum and South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley, neither police officers nor hostages were injured.

Paramedics then examined the suspect, who was pronounced dead at the scene, Thum said.

Calls from the Associated Press to the gas station were not answered Wednesday.

The South Dakota Attorney General's Office of Criminal Investigation is investigating the shooting and is expected to release a report in about a month.

Thum did not provide further details on the suspect's identity and did not say whether the deputy involved in the shooting had been suspended.
