The South Carolina Forestry Commission offers safety tips on fireworks and outdoor campfires

(WJBF) – With many people spending time outdoors this summer, the South Carolina Forestry Commission is offering safety tips to help prevent the spread of serious fires.

Due to dry conditions in the Southeast, including the state of South Carolina, people are urged to act responsibly and take precautions before lighting any type of fire.

“We urge anyone planning to burn anything to exercise extreme caution,” said Doug Wood, communications director for the South Carolina Forestry Commission. “With many people off work and doing things outside – including burning yard waste, having barbecues and setting off fireworks – the potential for danger is higher than normal.”

According to Wood, free-flying debris from outdoor fires is the leading cause of wildfires in South Carolina, accounting for more than half of all fires.

Statistically, fireworks are rarely the cause of wildfires, Wood said, but that doesn't mean they don't cause wildfires. Last fiscal year, seven wildfires were sparked by fireworks.

Here are some tips for forest fire prevention:

• Observe local regulations regarding fireworks.

• Light fireworks in a safe area away from dry fields, woods and buildings.

• Properly extinguish coals from grills and fire pits before leaving the area.

• Do not park on dry vegetation.

• Be careful that trailer and RV safety chains do not drag on the pavement. This can create sparks that can ignite dry vegetation.

• Limit fires to plant material such as leaves, branches and twigs.

• Clear a firebreak around the fire site.

• Have the proper equipment ready to control the fire and stay with the fire until it is completely safe.
