Fourth of July celebrations around the State Capitol gain momentum

BISMARCK, N.D. (KXNET) — Some people spend the holiday grilling, watching fireworks and spending time with family.

“I'm going to spend some time with my family. We don't have any plans yet. We usually like to spend some time together,” said Christi Carpenter of Moffit.

“We spend time with family, friends, fireworks and rodeo. Americana!” shouted a Bismarck resident.

“We'll go there before the parade, but first we'll do a 5K run and then we'll get a medal or something. We'll also go camping,” said Caroline and her sister Malia of Bismarck.

Richard Fleckenstein of Sertoma Amusement Park said the park will remain open until 6 p.m. for families and the weather will not deter them.

“It would have to rain quite a lot and rain all day long for us not to be here,” said Fleckenstein.

And members of the Bismarck Mandan Symphony Orchestra will honor Independence Day by playing at the North Dakota State Capitol.

“This is very meaningful to me and the musicians, and especially the opportunity to honor our veterans and those who are currently serving or have served in the armed forces. In fact, we have several in our orchestra, so this is a very special part of this evening,” said Beverly Everett, conductor of the Bismarck Mandan Symphony Orchestra.

The Braveheart Band will start with some music. Then, around 9 a.m., the Armed Colors will be presented and patriotic songs will be played. After their concert, there will be a fireworks display on the Capitol grounds.

Everett said playing for what is expected to be thousands of citizens means a lot to her, especially on Independence Day.

“If you had a camera pointed at me during the concert, you would probably see that I get a little misty-eyed sometimes. So it means a lot to me to be able to do that,” Everett said.

One Bismarck resident said, “Historically, it goes back to the beginning of our country, and in this day and age, we kind of lose track of what that means. So it's very important that we stop every year and remember who came before us. And that we make sure we continue down that path.”

“The Fourth of July is very special to me. First, because I love my country. Second, because my family has roots in law enforcement and the military,” said Christi Carpenter of Moffit.

“The Fourth of July is a great day for our country and a day to celebrate our freedom,” said Fleckenstein.

Caroline from Bismarck said: “It’s like the birthday of the USA”

No matter what you do this Independence Day weekend, whether you're boating on the lake with your family, setting off fireworks, or listening to the Bismarck Symphony and Orchestra here in North Dakota's state capital, it's important to pause and remember why we celebrate this Independence Day and who sacrificed their lives for our freedom.

“Go USA!” shouted a Bismarck resident.

“Go USA!” said Caroline and Malia from Bismarck.

From all of us here at KX News we wish everyone a safe and happy Fourth of July weekend.

If you want to go to the Bismarck State Capitol and watch the symphony, the festivities begin around 7:30 p.m. and end with a fireworks display around 10:30 p.m.
