Texas A&M vs. Arkansas Week 5 Preview: Keys to the Game

The Texas A&M Aggies and the Arkansas Razorbacks will spend their fifth week playing the 81st edition of the Southwest Classic at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Not only is Texas A&M very versatile on both sides of the ball, but they have won 11 of their last 12 meetings against Arkansas. Not to mention, they will be playing in their home state. College Station is still a bit closer to Jerry World than Fayetteville, AR.

Still, this is a rivalry game and you can bet that half the stadium will be red and the other half will be maroon.

With that in mind, the following must happen for Texas A&M or Arkansas to lift the trophy in Arlington in Week 5:

Texas A&M wins if …

…they're doing the same thing they did last year, they're stopping the running game.

It seems to be a recurring theme at the Southwest Classic lately. When Arkansas can't get going on the field, the Aggies take full advantage and use their own running game to their advantage. Last year was a case in point, when Arkansas managed a measly 42 yards on the ground. Texas A&M took it and ran (no pun intended), racking up over 400 total yards on offense. Win number 12 in 13 years for the Maroon and White will surprise absolutely no one.

Arkansas wins if …

…they outperform A&M's defense and shut down Conner Weigman.

In their last win in this rivalry in 2021, Arkansas allowed the Aggies to score just 10 points on offense. Yes, Weigman wasn't under center at that point, but last year A&M scored 34 points. They stop the offense and win a few games of chess against the defense? Arkansas will be laughing all the way back to Fayetteville.

Can we write that off completely? Absolutely not. But with the recent surge in recruits the Aggies have brought in, Arkansas may face a bigger challenge than expected on Sept. 28 in Arlington.
