2026 DL Kobe Cherry has a strong connection with the Indiana program

Kobe Cherry has a better feel for the IU program than most recruits do. The standout from Greenwood (IN) Center Grove H.S. is the younger brother of current Indiana freshman quarterback Tyler Cherry. The younger Cherry spoke to Peegs.com about the strong relationship he has built with the IU coaching staff.

Cherry said he envisions big things happening for Indiana football with Curt Cignetti and his staff leading the program.

“Coach Cignetti is here to win, no doubt about it,” Cherry said. “He is developing his players into the best players and people they can be. The sky is the limit for them because the staff is incredible.”

While Cherry has developed a bond with several members of the IU staff, the relationship he has with assistant Pat Kuntz is especially strong.

“Coach Kuntz is like a brother to me,” Cherry said. “He never fails to ask how I’m doing and how my family is doing. He talks to me about his vision for me as a player in the future, and about the future for a Indiana football. Coach Kuntz wants me at Indiana because he thinks I can be an easy piece to the puzzle that will fit anywhere. He sees me being able to play anywhere on his D-line, and he thinks I am the type of guy that can fit into any missing piece.”

The three-star recruit said Tyler has talked about the family atmosphere that the new coaching staff has developed within the football program.

“The number one thing that Tyler talks about to me is the family like relationship they have at IU,” Cherry said about the message he has heard from his brother Tyler. “In his case it is with Coach Tino Sunseri, but I can see that connection being formed with me and Coach Kuntz.”

Indiana was the first school to extend an offer to in-state defensive line prospect Kobe Cherry.

Cherry plans on getting down to Bloomington as often as he can this fall to spend time with his brother and with the coaches.

“I don’t have any visits planned as of now, but I am always willing to go down to see Tyler and my guys on the coaching staff any time,” Cherry said. “I will definitely be making my fair share of visits to the games as well.”

Cherry has offers from Indiana, Louisville, and Washington to go along with interest from Kansas, Michigan, and Miami (OH). As a sophomore he recorded 70 tackles, six tackles for loss, and three sacks as a sophomore last fall. Cherry is ranked the sixth best prospect in Indiana and the number 42 defensive lineman in the country according to the 247Sports rankings.
