Half of the Sawtooth Elk Zone tags will be sold at Fish and Game offices and license vendors at 10 a.m. MDT on July 12. The other half of the Sawtooth Elk Zone tags will be sold online and by phone at (800) 554-8685 at 1 p.m. MDT and will be subject to the same sales process and rules listed below.

To see how many tags are available, visit Fish and Game's Resident Capped Elk Zone website.

Who is eligible to purchase tags?

All Idaho residents with a valid 2024 hunting license who have not applied for a controlled elk hunt will be able to purchase a limited elk zone stamp immediately after sales begin.

Hunters who have applied for a controlled moose hunt must wait five days, with some exceptions, including those who have applied for a specially controlled hunt, super hunt tags and predator hunts.

How to prepare for the sale

Hunters are asked to set up their GoOutdoorsIdaho.com account or verify their existing account prior to the sale to ensure a smooth online or in-person sign-up process. Hunters born after 1974 are required to have a hunter education certificate on file. Bowhunters must also present their archery certificate.

If you are making your purchase through the GoOutdoorsIdaho mobile app, make sure you have downloaded the latest version from the app store.

Hunters must have a valid hunting license to purchase a tag online, but both can be purchased at the same time. The hunting license will not be refunded if a hunter does not obtain the desired tag.

Information about online sales

A virtual waiting room will be open prior to the sale and hunters can register during that time at GoOutdoorsIdaho.com. If the hunter logs into the site and does not see the waiting room, they must log out and return to the site shortly before the sale begins at 10 a.m. MDT. Each person may only register for the sale on one device. If you wish to purchase for multiple people, each person must register on a separate device.

At 10:00 a.m. MDT, all customers in the virtual waiting room will be randomly assigned a place in the queue. Customers who log in after 10:00 a.m. MDT will be placed at the end of the queue.

Important information about online sales

The virtual waiting room uses cookies to track the user's place in the queue. If a user is in incognito mode, has privacy settings that delete cookies, or uses system settings that automatically delete their search history, this may result in them losing their place in the queue after leaving the page.

If you are logged in and change devices, for example from computer to mobile phone or from desktop to laptop, you will lose your place in the queue.

You have 30 minutes to purchase your tag after it is selected

When a label is added to the cart, the shopper has 30 minutes to complete the transaction. The label may be deleted from the cart if the transaction is not completed within this time.

Buyers will receive a purchase confirmation via email within 24 hours. Tags will be shipped within 10 business days of the sale date.

Online shoppers may experience long wait times and tags may sell out quickly

Demand for some elk tags will be high, and the most popular elk areas can sell out in minutes or hours. Unfortunately, this means some hunters will have to wait a long time to purchase a tag, and tags may sell out while they wait.

There will be no real-time count of how many tags remain for each elk zone, as tags are sold simultaneously online, at dealers and at regional offices. Fish and Game staff will attempt to post when elk zones sell out, but there may be delays as tags are added to or removed from online shopping carts.

Camping is not permitted near fishing and hunting offices.

To avoid disruption to public service and to ensure fair and orderly sales of limited elk zone tags, Idaho Fish and Game does not permit camping at regional offices or headquarters in Boise.

Chairs are permitted for use in the queues, but sleeping bags or other camping equipment are not permitted. Restrooms in most offices are only available during regular business hours, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

In fishing and hunting regions, procedures for selling restricted elk zone tags may vary slightly, so if you have any further questions, please call the region where you plan to purchase.
