Mainers' wild conspiracy theory about a 2020 earthquake

Earthquake in the northeast

Earthquakes are not as common in the Northeast, particularly in New England. However, April 2024 was a rare occurrence, when a magnitude 4.8 earthquake with an epicenter in New Jersey (according to NBC Boston) was felt between Virginia and the Massachusetts-New Hampshire border late in the morning of April 5.

Just a few hours later, an aftershock measuring 4.0 on the Richter scale was felt.

And while no one questioned the validity of that April 2024 earthquake—just a few years earlier, when one was felt in parts of Maine—the conspiracy theorists took the matter and ran. Far.

So, incredibly far.

Earthquake in Maine

According to NECN, two separate earthquakes occurred in Maine on December 9, 2020, the first measuring 2.4 and the second measuring 3.0 on the border between Maine and New Brunswick, Canada.

That same day, a plane crash involving a pilot and an F-16 fighter jet occurred in Michigan, according to USA Today. So what does this have to do with Maine and the earthquake near the border?

Maine conspiracy theory

According to Task & Purpose, for some reason a conspiracy theory arose that the earthquake story was actually a cover-up and that it was actually a bombing raid on 50,000 Chinese soldiers who shot down the aforementioned F-16 fighter jet from Maine during their invasion of the United States.

The conspiracy theory rumors were quickly nipped in the bud by the Maine National Guard when Task & Purpose reached out for comment.

The Maine National Guard has no knowledge of any such troop movements or military actions and would undoubtedly have been notified through military or emergency management channels if such a significant event had occurred in the State of Maine.

2020 was a wild time, wasn't it?
