Dangerous goods warning: Train carrying hazardous goods derails and explodes in North Dakota

Shocking images captured the moment a train loaded with toxic materials derailed and exploded in a fireball in North Dakota.

After 29 cars of a CPKC train derailed around 3:45 a.m. Friday, hazardous materials teams were dispatched to a remote area about 140 miles (225 kilometers) from Fargo.

Hazardous substances on the train included anhydrous ammonia, sulfur and methanol. Officials warned of toxic smoke coming from the wreckage.

The greatest risk is from ammonia. Contact with this compound can cause burning in the eyes, nose and throat, as well as blindness, lung damage and death.

Health officials said they currently have no plans to evacuate the area, but they may try to clear the town of Bordulac, which has about 20 residents, if the wind shifts.

“The wind was on our side on this one,” Bill Suess, program manager for oil spill investigations at the North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality, told WKMG6.

“Although this risk has decreased significantly, it still exists as long as there are fires.”

The cause of the derailment is currently unclear; the train driver and conductor were reportedly able to leave the scene of the accident unharmed.

Andrew Kirking, Foster County emergency management director, said at the beginning of the investigation, it was believed that between 10 and 15 cars on the train had caught fire.

Railroad firefighters were on site battling the flames. Footage shared on social media shows a huge fireball engulfing the wreckage.

CPKC said in a statement that it had “launched its emergency response plan and initiated a comprehensive, coordinated response.”
