CT incarceration rate low compared to US, high compared to global, according to report

While Connecticut had a higher incarceration rate than countries like Canada and France in 2022, it had the ninth-lowest rate among U.S. states, according to data released last month by the Prison Policy Initiative, a New England-based policy think tank.

In 2022, Connecticut had 326 inmates per 100,000 residents, compared to 608 in the U.S. The rate was highest in Louisiana, at 1,067, and lowest in Massachusetts, at 241.
