Franz Wagner extends his contract with Orlando Magic by five years and $224 million

Franz Wagner is staying in Orlando. On Friday, the German striker signed a massive five-year, $224 million contract extension that, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, ties him to the Orlando Magic for the foreseeable future.

The deal, which represents a maximum rookie extension, could be worth as much as $269 million. According to Wojnarowski, Wagner can earn 30 percent of Orlando's salary cap if he is selected to the All-NBA team.

In 2023, Wagner averaged 19.7 points per game, just behind teammate Paolo Banchero, and also averaged 5.3 rebounds and 3.7 assists.

Wagner is also one of the Magic's most consistent players in terms of the number of games played: In three 82-game seasons in Orlando, he missed only 15 games and played over 7,000 minutes. Last season, he averaged 32:28 minutes per game.

Selected eighth overall by the Magic in the 2021 draft, Wagner quickly developed into a key starter for Orlando, and was named to the 2022 NBA All-Rookie First Team after averaging 15.2 points and 30:44 minutes per game throughout the season.

Wagner joined his brother Moritz Wagner on the Magic. The two are one of 13 sets of brothers in the NBA, but one of only three – along with Giannis and Thanasis Antetokoumpo and Brook and Robin Lopez, all of whom play for the Milwaukee Bucks – to play for the same team.

Last summer, both Wagners led Germany to a gold medal at the 2023 FIBA World Cup, and Franz was named to the All-Tournament Second Team for his efforts. The two are expected to play for Germany in Paris this summer.
