An outstanding track and field athlete and baseball player was named Athlete of the Week by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Wyoming WyoPreps. Valerie Jirk of Star Valley and Trey Schroeder of Cody were selected to receive the award for their achievements from June 24-30, 2024.

WYOPREPS STATEMENT FOR ATHLETE OF THE WEEK, JULY 5, 2024

Winner Girl

Jirak won the heptathlon at the Nike Outdoor Nationals track and field meet in Eugene, Oregon, last month. Jirak set a personal record with 5,201 total points. She won three of the seven events. Jirak started with a second-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles at 14.74 seconds. She followed that with a second-place finish in the high jump at 1.65 meters (5-05) and a fifth-place finish in the shot put at a personal record of 9.31 meters (30-06.50). She won the 200 meters at 24.73 seconds and the long jump at 5.84 meters (19-02). After placing third in the javelin at 30.65 meters (100-07), Jirak finished the 800 meter run with a win in 2:18.49.

WyoPreps visited Ms. Jirak on Friday morning after being unavailable for a few weeks. Jirak was very happy with the win, compared her performance this year to last year when she placed fifth, went over the events, talked about how pleased her college coaches were and more.

Winner Boys

Schroeder helped Cody go 6-0 last week. He had a .429 batting average with nine hits and eight RBIs. Trey's hits included two doubles and a triple, eight runs scored and a stolen base. On the mound, Schroeder was 2-0 with a 2.33 ERA. He pitched nine innings and allowed three hits on seven hits. Schroeder had five walks and struck out 14 hitters. The opponents' batting average was .233.

Schroeder spoke to WyoPreps about his big week. The discussion began with the Cubs' 12-game winning streak, his style of play both at bat and on the mound, what the team will focus on moving forward and more.
