Watch: Teenager battles runaway boat in New Hampshire

A 17-year-old is credited with jumping from a Sea-Doo onto the race boat after the throttle was pushed into forward gear and the driver fell off.

GILFORD, NH — The dramatic recovery of an out-of-control boat on New Hampshire's Lake Winnipesaukee was captured on video Wednesday as the operator of a school boat was pushed out to sea and the boat continued to spin.

Rich Bono captured the scene on video and said a 17-year-old in the back seat of a Sea-Doo managed to jump onto the spinning boat, gain control and stop it.

The boat was piloted by an instructor from the Lake Winnipesaukee Sailing Association who trained young sailors.

Sailing school president Jay Norden told NEWS CENTER Maine that the instructor put the boat in neutral and bent down to pick up a tennis ball from the water that is used as a training tool. Then, Norden said, a passing sailboat tilted slightly and its boom pushed the throttle forward onto the instructor's boat. The sudden movement threw the instructor from the boat, and the boat continued on without him.

Norden said the other instructors quickly moved to clear the area, making sure all students were out of the way of the spinning boat, and pulled the instructor from the water.

He was wearing a life jacket but did not use the emergency release cord, which would have cut off power to the engine when he fell from the boat.

The school has since launched its own investigation and Norden said they will ensure all teachers use the cut lanyard at all times to ensure something like this never happens again.

No injuries were reported, and Norden said they were grateful for the action of the young man who jumped onto the boat to stop it.
