South Carolina pastor registered as sex offender; elders say they knew

Parishioners are demanding more transparency after it was revealed that the pastor of Eternal Church in Fort Mill, South Carolina, is a registered sex offender. Don Logan, who was pastor of the nondenominational church, since 2015was convicted of child sexual abuse in 1997.

The church was affiliated with the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA), but left the denomination in 2009.

Dana Cummings, who used to attend the church, said Fort Mill Sun that she and her husband learned of Logan's status as a sex offender after receiving a cryptic email about a meeting to discuss Logan's past.

“I realized something was very wrong,” Cummings said. “My husband joked, 'Is he a sex offender?'”

Shortly after a brief online search for sex offenders, the couple began looking for a new church.

According to Indiana Court recordsAs part of a plea agreement, Logan pleaded guilty in 1997 to sexual abuse of a minor under the age of 16. He was sentenced to three years in prison, with an additional three years suspended until he complied with probation requirements.

As part of the agreement, the court also ordered that Logan “surrender his minister's license, have no contact with minors without adult supervision, and that the nature of his employment be approved by the court and the probation office.”

Logan was 30 years old at the time.

According to the Sex offender registry In Lexington County, South Carolina, the victim was a 14-year-old girl.

“I feel like the people who come in here and decide to become members and invest their time, money and effort need to know who is preaching to them. He's a wonderful preacher,” Cummings said. “But it really takes away any credibility from him when I feel like that history is being covered up under the guise that only the right people know.”
