Leon County animal rescuer faces new charges over 'neglected' pigs

A woman arrested in May on charges of cruelty to dogs now faces additional charges for housing 33 “overbred” and “malnourished” pigs in violation of court orders, authorities say.

Judy Dubois, 58, was charged Wednesday with 12 new offenses, including “cruelty to animals, torturing, depriving, maiming or killing animals.” She has been held in the Leon County Detention Center since Thursday afternoon, where she is required to post $250 bail.

Dubois has been embroiled in legal battles since late April to defend the reputation of her rescue organization while fending off fierce backlash from neighbors who have criticized her business for years, claiming she is more of a hoarder than a rescuer.

On May 4 – two days after her initial arrest – Leon County Sheriff's officers visited Dubois' property to conduct “a livestock seizure operation,” according to court records. Officers saw that she still had animals, which was a violation of a court order.
