‘A free spirit’: Family remembers nurse who drowned in Montana national park

A North Apollo woman who drowned in a Montana national park will be remembered for her “free spirit,” her older brother said Tuesday in an exclusive interview with Pittsburgh's Action News 4. Gillian Tones, 26, slipped on wet, slippery rocks and fell into Virginia Creek on Sunday, the National Park Service said in a statement. “When you hear something like that, you're shocked,” said Dillon Tones, Gillian's older brother. “You wait for, 'It was just an accident, she's going to be OK, they took her somewhere.' But we never got to that part of the conversation.” Dillon described his sister, who was set to turn 27 next week, as “adventurous” and “ambitious.” “She was just always open to new ideas, new ways of living,” Dillon said. “She was very open to anyone and everyone.” Gillian worked as a travel nurse and had previously received an award for her exemplary work. “She's a caregiver. She loved her job, her career. She worked so hard to become a nurse,” Dillon said. “She makes people feel so important in moments of need.” Dillon said he is grateful to Gillian's boyfriend and the strangers nearby who rushed to save Gillian. Gillian's family has set up a GoFundMe account to help pay for funeral expenses and bring Gillian home to Pennsylvania.
